Hummingbirds

We have been trying to learn all we can about the birds that call our area home.  The most fun, for myself anyway, has been getting to know the sweet little pair of hummingbirds that live in the great big tree in front of the house.  This isn't our first year to spot them, but this is the first time we've sat out and tried to capture photographs of them.  Sitting very still and quiet, listening to their call and waiting to spot them zipping by.  Did you know they can beat their little wings about 80 beats per second during normal flight?  And they eat A LOT. We even bought them a  lovely new feeder this year to let them know we welcome them.

We've become fast friends, these tiny birds and I, though they are just starting to warm up to the idea of having their picture taken.  We had a major breakthrough this weekend when, while refiling the feeder, the little male came up to investigate and even landed on my hand for a bit.  I think that means I've been accepted.
